In the 2nd ODI of the series of 3 which was played at St George’s Oval Cricket Stadium, South Africa won the game by 8 wickets. By acquiring 119 runs on 122 balls and also scoring his maiden ODI century, Tony de Zorzi won the praises as well as the man of the match title. Furthermore, his maiden ODI century leads his team towards the emphatic victory in this ODI with 45 remaining balls. Previously he scored 27, 21 and 28 runs in his ODIs but this match showed his true potential.

Introduction of Tony de Zorzi

Tony is a South African National Left-hand top order Batsman who joined the South Africa National Cricket team recently in 2023. Furthermore, he has played only Test Internationals and ODI formats of Cricket for South Africa until now. Tony is currently the most promising rising talent in South African Cricket. From his young age he had already scored 6 list-A centuries and 16 half centuries.

Early life 

Tony de Zorzi was born in Johannesburg on August 28,1997. He attained his early education from Prestigious Schools. Tony was fond of cricket from a very young age and also cricket was his hobby. Before making a t20 debut tony was the leader of South Africa Under-19 Squad for ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup 2016.

Although he was born and raised in Johannesburg, tony performed for Gauteng at under-13 level. Later he appeared in under-15, under-17 & under-19 sides too. In addition, after watching his excellence in leadership he was then chosen to lead the under-19 squad for ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Domestic Career

At domestic cricket, Tony started by playing for Northerns as his first- class debut in the 2016-17 Sunfoil 3-day Cup Series in 2016. In contrast his debut for List- A cricket was also for Northerns in 2016. There he played for CSA Provincial One day Challenge 2016-17. Whereas in 2017, he joined Pretoria Mavericks for the 1st season of T20 global League which was abandoned later. However, his first domestic century was of List- A cricket where he batted for Titans opposing Knights in Momentum One day Cup 2017-18.

During 2018 he was also selected as the Captain of Emerging Squad of Cricket South Africa. Furthermore, during the same year, he was appointed in the squad of Tshwane Spartans for Mzansi Super League 2018. Later he again played for Tshwane Spartans 2019 too. However, he scored his maiden double century of first-class cricket with 213 runs in 2020. There he played against Cape Cobras in CSA 4-Day Franchise Series 2019-20. Later he also played for Western Province in the Cricket Season in South Africa 2021-22.

International Career

Tony joined the South African National Cricket team in February 2023 when he was named in the test squad for a series against the West Indies. So, he first appeared in test cricket while playing against the West Indies on February 28,2023. In the next month he was selected in the ODI squad of South Africa for a series against West Indies. Hence, his ODI debut was also against West Indies on March 18,2023. Later in the next month he was selected as the captain of South Africa Squad for the South Africa tour to Sri Lanka.
