Introduction

St George’s Park or Crusaders ground are the other names of the great Saint George’s Park Cricket Stadium. It is located in St George’s Park in South Africa and established in 1882. Furthermore, this ground is famous for its brass band which is played during the important matches and is a unique aspect of the ground.

Moreover, ODIs and Test International Matches are played at this ground in South Africa. In addition, this ground serves Port Elizabeth Cricket Club (the oldest club of South Africa), the Eastern Province Club, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape as their home ground. The venue’s architecture contains a Victorian Style pavilion with a red brick exterior. In addition, a clock tower is also installed which dominates the whole space.

Official Name of the Ground

Although the official name of the Stadium is the result of the commercial Sponsorship Arrangement however, the residents of South Africa call it by its old and historic name St George’s Park. In addition, the nickname of this ground “The Dragon’s Lair” is also very famous which is based on the legendary Character of Saint George.

International Details of the St George’s Park Cricket Ground

Test Internationals

The venue hosted its 1st Test International Match in March 1889 which was between South Africa and the England team. Later the guest team Cricket team defeated the home team with 8 wickets. Moreover almost 21 Test Matches were played at the venue until 2005 among which 8 were won by South Africa. Whereas 9 Matches were won by the opponent teams and 4 matches were drawn.

ODIs

The Start of ODIs in the venue was in December 1992 where South Africa defeated India by 6 Wickets. Total 25 ODIs were played at this ground till 2005 amongst which 5 Matches were of Cricket World Cup 2003.

T20Is

The beginning of T20Is at the venue started from a match between South Africa and West Indies on December 16, 2007. However, the upcoming T20i is scheduled between South Africa and India on December 12, 2023.

Women’s Test International

St George’s Park hosted only one Test Match of Women which was on December 2-6, 1960. Whereas the opponent teams were South Africa and England.

Women’s T20Is

Australia and Bangladesh were the opposing teams in the first Women’s T20 at the venue which was held on February 14, 2023. Furthermore, the last WT20I was played here on February 20, 2023, between India and Ireland.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2003

Among Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa this ground was also included among the 15 venues to host World Cup 2003’s Matches. Furthermore, a total of 5 matches were played at this ground during the tournament. Moreover, 3 group games, 1 Super six game and a semi-final was played here.

Indian Premier League 2009

During the IPL 2009, some matches were played at different Stadiums of South Africa. So, St George’s Park was also among the 8 venues to hold the IPL 2009 matches. In addition, 7 Matches of the group games were played at this venue.

Warrior’s Cricket

The venue was declared as one of the Warrior 2’’s home ground. Moreover, various matches of Warriors were played at this venue during the Sunfoil series, Momentum 1 day Cup.

Renovation of the St George’s Park Cricket Ground

Many renovations of the ground at various time periods were done. The installation of floodlights was done in 2007. Later the ground upgraded the media facilities in 2012. However, the upgradation at large scale was done in 2017 when the new floodlights along with the LED’s were installed.

The pitch of this venue is grass and facilitates the Spinners and fast bowlers. However, the teams batting first here have an edge over the teams bowling. So, every team decides to bat first at this pitch after winning the toss.
