Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, hosted the 30th Match of the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup. Furthermore, this match was played on October 30, 2023, between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan teams.

At the Start, team Afghanistan decided to bowl first after winning the toss. Moreover, the fielding by them proved their excellency in the game. Later, they restricted the score to just 241 runs with the loss of all wickets for Sri Lanka which resulted in the defeat of the Sri Lanka team. Thus, with 7 wickets and 28 balls remaining, Afghanistan won this match with elegance. However, the Man of the Match was awarded to Fazal Haq Farooqi for his wonderful bowling and spell of 4/34.

First Innings, SL vs AFG

Sri Lanka on 241 runs on the loss of 10 Wickets in 49.3 overs

Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne

At the start of the 1st innings, Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne were the openers from the Sri Lanka team. Whereas the bowler from the Afghanistan team was Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Moreover, during the first 5 overs the players played at a slow pace. However, after the 5th over, Karunaratne succeeded to hit a boundary 4 whereas the next ball resulted in the loss of his wicket by Fazal Haq Farooqi at his 15/21 runs.

Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis (C)

Kusal Mendis, the captain of the SL team was the next batsman. Later, the Audience again cheered up as Nissanka played a beautiful boundary 4 on the 2nd ball of the 7th over. In addition, Nissanka repeated 2 boundary 4s during the 8th and the 9th over too. 

At the 10 overs, Sri Lanka’s total score was 41/1. After 10 overs, Nissanka became more Stable on the pitch as he hit a 4 again during the 10th over beautifully. However, Mendis initiated his first boundary 4 during the 14th over after a flawless 4 from Nissanka. Later Mendis again played a spectacular 4 during the 16th over. However, at the first ball of the 18th over, Nissanka was out on the ball by Azmatullah at his 46/60 runs.

Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama

After the 2nd wicket loss and few more runs by Mendis and Sadeera (the next player) 20 overs were completed with 87/2 runs for the Afghanistan team. Furthermore after 20 overs, Sadeera initiated 2 classic 4s on the 4th and the 6th ball with the addition of 4 from Mendis during the 21st over too.

Later at the 5th ball of the 22nd over, Sadeera again played a sizzling 4. After the 22nd over Match became slow with few runs without any boundary hit. At the 4th ball of the 27th over, Mendis lost his wicket on the ball by Mujeeb at his 39/50 runs.

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka

Charith Asalanka came and after a few balls Sadeera went out on his wicket dismissal by Mujeeb at the first ball of the 29th over. Whereas the total score for Sadeera Samarawickrama was 36/40.

Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva

Dhananjaya de Silva joined Asalanka on the crease. In addition, he hit an exquisite boundary 4 on the 3rd ball he got by Mujeeb. At 30 overs, SL was on 144/4. After 2 more overs and on the 4th ball of the 33rd over, Asalanka too initiated a fantastic 4. Later on, the last ball of the 35th over, Dhananjaya’s wicket was dismissed on the ball by Rasid Khan at his 14/26 runs.

Charith Asalanka and Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews came next. However, Asalanka’s wicket was taken by the ball of Fazal Haq at the 5th ball of the 38th over after one more 4 from him. In addition, his total score was 22/28 runs.

Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera

Dushmantha Chameera came as the next player. However, he only stayed on the crease for an over and lost his wicket on the last ball of the 39th over by Rashid Khan at his ¼ run.

Angelo Mathews and Maheesh Theekshana

On the appearance of Maheesh Theekshana on the crease, 40 overs were completed with 185/7 for the Sri Lanka team. Moreover, Theekshana initiated 2 flawless back-to-back 4s during the 42nd over. Later after one more 4 from Theekshana, Angelo Mathews played the first boundary 6 on the first ball of the 45th over magnificiently. In addition, Theekshana too initiated a spectacular 6 during the 46th over.

 Later on the last ball of the 46th over, Theekshana’s wicket was dropped on the ball by Fazalhaq at his 29/31 runs.

Angelo Mathews and Kasun Rajitha

Kasun Rajitha was the next batsman from Sri Lanka team. Angelo again produced a fabulous 4 on the last ball of the 47th over he was out during the 48th over by Fazal Haq at his 23/26 runs.

Kasun Rajitha and Dilshan Madushanka

Madushanka was the last player, and he was unable to make any run because the wicket of Kasun Rajitha was out on run out by Rahmanullah at 5/7 runs. So, the first innings were completed at 49.4 overs at 241 runs giving the chase target of 242 to team Afghanistan.

2nd Innings, SL vs AFG

Afghanistan on 242 runs on the loss of 3 wickets in 45.2 overs

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran were the opening batsmen from Afghanistan team at the start of the 2nd innings. Whereas Dilshan Madushanka was the bowler from team Sri Lanka. However, Gurbaz was unfortunate as his wicket was dismissed just on the 4th ball without making any run on the ball by Madushanka.

Rahmat Shah came as the next batsman and the play started again. At the last ball of the 2nd over, Zadran hit a flaming 4. Later on, the 3rd ball of the 3rd over, Rahmat also initiated a boundary 4. At the last ball of the 4th over, Rahmat again threw a 4 and made the total 20/1 in 5 overs.

At the last ball of the 5th over, the audience cheered up as Zadran initiated a sizzling boundary 6 on the ball by Rajitha. In contrast, Rahmat hit a 4 on the first ball of the 6th over, following him Zadran too again played a fabulous 4 during the 6th over. At this point, the 2nd innings went beautifully with good runs made by both Players.

By the addition of 2 4s from Zadran and a 4 from Rahmat, the score became 50/1 for Afghanistan at 10 overs. Later the game went slow until the 16th over without any boundary hit by both players. Whereas, at the 2nd last ball of the 16th over, Ibrahim Zadran was out on the strike by Madushanka at 39/57 runs.


Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi (C)

The game proceeded again by the arrival of Hashmatullah Shahidi as the next batsman. Furthermore, the game went slow and steady without any boundary hit until the 20th 0ver with total score 87/2 runs.

However, Hashmatullah created an uproar again by playing a strong boundary 6 on the 3rd ball of the 20th over.  At the first ball of the 23rd over, Rahmat played a fabulous 4 and later completed his half Century (50) at the first ball of the 24th over. Before losing his wicket at the last ball of 27th over, Rahmat played two more fantastic boundary 4s. Later he was out on the ball by Rajitha at 62/74 runs.

Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai

Azmatullah Omarzai was the next player. At the completion of the 30 overs, Afghanistan was on 139/3 including a fantastic 4 from Dhananjaya de Silva too. After the 30 overs, Match again went slow without any boundary till the 34th over. However, at the 3rd ball of the 34th over, Azmatullah initiated his first boundary 6 beautifully. At the first ball of the 35th over, Azmatullah proved himself a wonderful performer as he hitted one more classical 6.

 Further Azmatullah played a 6 and a 4 along with slow runs from Hashmatullah and completed the 40 overs without any wicket loss for Afghanistan. So, at the 40 overs, Afghanistan’s score was 201/3. Azmatullah was on fire as he hit more boundary 4s during 42nd, 43rd and 44th overs amazingly. Besides, the players also completed their half Centuries prior to the 42nd over. At the first ball of the 45th over, the players wrap up the game by winning this Match completing the 242 runs with grace.

The total score of Hashmatullah was 58/74 and 73/63 for Azmatullah.

So, the team Afghanistan defeated the Sri Lanka team with 7 Wickets and 28 balls Remaining.
