In the 1998–1999 cricket season, the Pakistani national team visited India. Both teams competed in two tests. It ended in a 1-1 tie. The 1998–1999 Asian Test Championship replaced the third of the three Test matches initially scheduled between the teams.

Politics and cricket are closely related, particularly when a match scheduled among Pakistan and India. India’s current world cup defeat by Pakistan has triggered a heated debate on both aspects concerning patriotism, with assured self-appointed guardians like India’s ineffectual trolls raising concerns about national self-esteem although Waqar Younis and his Islamic extremism are called into doubt.

However, earlier times were different.

Without needing to defend their patriotism from 1999, when the country was in a different situation, crowds could sincerely celebrate Pakistan’s win. And it took place in Chennai, a city where the analysts have frequently complimented for having a population that is extremely reasonable.

India, the host nation for the 1st Test match among Pakistan and India, was at 254/6 on the 4th day of play on 31 January, 1999 in Chennai. At 136, Sachin Tendulkar is batting and Saqlain Mushtaq is bowling. For Pakistan to win, they required 4 wickets and India required 17 runs for victory. The crowd was tense, and the outcome of the game was still in confusion.

During the previous few days, Many things have been happening. From 91/5 to 238, Pakistan has increased. Pakistan’s score dropped from 275/4 to 286 runs after India had scored 254. When Sachin and Nayan Mongia came to the rescue, India was facing difficult situations at 82/5. The match had reached a point when it was level-headed, and all the Indians were pleading for Sachin to bring the trophy India.

However, destiny had different plans. A disastrous collapse resulted from Sachin’s mistimed shot off Saqlain, which led to an easy catch for captain Wasim Akram. After loIndia4 wickets for 4 runs, India was bowled out for 258. Each sides of the Lime of control(Loc) were proud of Pakistan’s victory, which it achieved by a margin of 12 runs. However, the best of the game was still to come.

The Chennai supporters recognized what an amazing match they enjoyed and how well Pakistan played to win. The audience applauded the Pakistani players as they completed a triumphant lap while standing in perfect unison. As supporters cheered and celebrated the Travellers’ win, they won hearts thousands of kilometers far from their country. Cricket is all there is there is no sense of patriotism.

Background

After the periods of  12 years, the Pakistani squad was scheduled to visit India. 3 Test matches and 5 (ODI) games will be part of the tour, according to information from October 1998. The team was set to depart for India on January 21. The first Test was to begin on February 3 and the tour would end after the final ODI on March 15.

Later, it was revealed that the three Test matches would take place in Bangalore, Calcutta (now is famous as Kolkata), and Madras (now  known as Chennai), while the number of One-Day Internationals (now down to three) would be played in Kanpur, Mohali, and Cuttack.

However, the visit was in peril due to the prospect of disruption by some terrorist organisations in retaliation to the claimed Pakistani participation in the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. The Prime Minister of India promised that the travelling party would be secure. and sabotage the Board of Control for Cricket in India offices.

The inaugural Test match was moved to Madras (now known as Chennai) in the south of India in January 1999 after Shiv Sena militants excavating the wicket at the New Delhi venue.

In opposition to the tour, few activists also demonstrated outside the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi. On January 21, however, the Pakistani team landed in New Delhi after the menace were dropped and an urgent meeting was called by the Indian Home Minister.

The ODI series was abandoned, the number of Tests was lowered to two, and a 3rd Test was scheduled to be played as part of the 1998–1999 Asian Test Championship. With 7 wins and 4 losses in 44 games, Pakistan had a superior Test record against India when they arrived in India.

On January 14th, 1999, the Pakistani team for the tour was announced. Aamer Sohail was not included in the 16-person roster; Wajahatullah Wasti, who has no prior experience, was added in his place. Wasim Akram and Moin Khan had been given their respective captaincy assignments two weeks previously.

India named a 14-person team on January 21. 2 players, batsmen Ajay Jadeja and Navjot  Singh Sidhu, were left off the team that travelled to New Zealand. Sadagoppan Ramesh, an opening batsman, and all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla were also picked. Ajit Agarkar, a fast bowler, missed the first Test due to an injury.
