Introduction

Multan Sultans is one of the six teams in the PSL. Moreover, it is to be mentioned that the province of Punjab has two teams, including the Lahore Qalandars (representing North Punjab) and the Multan Sultans (representing South Punjab).

However, it is to be discussed that it has been part of PSL since 2018. Moreover, prior to that, only five teams were in the PSL. It is to be mentioned that, even being the latest team, it is one of the most famous due to its players’ performances.

Furthermore, Multan Cricket Stadium is the home ground for the Multan Sultans. Alamgir Khan Tareen and Ali Khan Tareen initially won the bid. However, since 2021, Alamgir Khan Tareen has been the sole owner of the Multan Sultans. Nevertheless, Ali Khan Tareen took full ownership in July 2023, after the death of Alamgir Khan Tareen. It is to be mentioned that Shahnawaz Dhani is the brand ambassador of the Multan Sultans.

Multan Sultans Franchise History

Just after the conclusion of PSL 2017, PSL chairman Najam Sethi announced the sixth team for next season. So the PCB shortlisted all five regions as possibilities for the sixth team. Moreover, the team established with the franchise was bought by Schon Properties after winning a bid for an eight-year contract against 10 contesting bidders.

Furthermore, on November 10, 2018, the PCB announced that the contract with Franchised had been terminated. Moreover, all rights are again reserved for the board. Moreover, it happened due to the failure of the franchise to pay their PCB fees.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board took responsibility for all players’ contracts’ while a public tender process took place to sell the rights for the franchise. Ali Khan Tareen and Alamgir Khan Tareen of Multan Consortium won the bid for the team.

Moreover, Alamgir Khan bought the sole ownership rights in 2021. Yet after his death, the rights went to Ali Khan Tareen in July 2023.

Multan Sultan’s Players and Categories

It is to be noted that players from each team have certain categories. Yet either they are platinum, diamond, gold, silver, emerging, or supplementary. The most exorbitant players are in the platinum category. Such players have much demand and are most prominent on their respective national teams.

Since the diamond categories are lower than those of platinum, they also contain national team players. Since the gold is below that, Silver has players in less demand on the national team.

However, Emerging contains players who are from different clubs and reach the level to compete for national cricket. Moreover, some players are added as supplementary members of the team.

Multan Sultan Players’ Brief

Mohammad Rizwan

Mohammad Rizwan has been the captain of Multan Sultan since 2021. Prior to that, Shoaib Malik and Shan Masood provided their services as the captains of the Multan Sultans. Yet since 2021, he has been the captain, and the owners have not found any need to replace him due to his smooth captaincy qualities.

As far as his own competency, He is the limited batsman and technically sound wicketkeeper. Yet he made his debut in international cricket in 2015. Moreover, he has been the most sound run-accumulator in domestic cricket. Since then, he has been the ever-present part of the Quaid e Azam trophy. Moreover, he has been appointed as the vice captain of Test cricket.

Moreover, he made his record-breaking year in 2021. Yet he collected the most T20I runs in that year. So he became prominent due to being the only one who could manage to score this high.

David Willey

David Willey is the competitive limited-overs cricketer. Yet he gained international caps in 2015. Moreover, he was a regular member of Team England. Moreover, he started his first-class career in 2009 in Northamptonshire. Yet he developed his bowling skills in 2012. Furthermore, he played in the 2015 Blast. Thus helping Yorkshire reach the finals in 2012.

Iftikhar Ahmed

Iftikhar Ahmed is the major all-rounder for Multan. Yet he is the middle-order batsman who can do right-hand batting and right-arm off-break bowling. Moreover, he began his career in 2015 through ODI matches. Yet he played his first T20I in 2016.

Moreover, he has joined PSL since 2016. He has been part of the Multan Sultans this time. But before that, he had been associated with the Quetta Gladiators.
