History of Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (MCAS)

The basic reason behind the construction of this stadium is a dispute over the ticket distribution of Nehru Stadium between Pune Municipal Corporation and MCA. So the international play between Sri Lanka and India was moved to Kolkata. Thus, MCA excused itself from hosting the event, which escalated the tension. Moreover, MCA concluded that a new stadium was a time requirement.

The BCCI organized the history-breaking ceremony on the construction site of the stadium on October 21, 2007. Moreover, it was held under the supervision of President Sharad Pawar. Moreover, Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd. was provided the contract to construct the first phase in November 2009. However, the construction started on November 14, 2007.

It is to be noted that Sir Michael Hopkins of Hopkins Architects was the major designer of this stadium. The same was the design of the Lord’s Mount stand and the Ageas Bowl stadium in England.

Yet the deadline for his first phase was November 2010, with a cost of ₹1.50 billion. Moreover, it was thought to cover 35 acres.

Moreover, the construction was done from 2010–12. Yet it faced certain issues before its completion. While the interesting fact is that it still needed to be completed, 75% of stands are roofless. However, the final phase of the building started in September 2023.

It is to be noted that MCA was thought to host the ICC World Cup 2011, but since it was under construction, it could not do so.

Not only do they have them, but there are many other good features too. The seating arrangement is designed in such a way to not obstruct the view in any way.

However, the most significant feature of this ground is its rainwater drainage. It is to be noted that most of the time matches are disturbed due to rainwater. However, the triple-layer drainage helps to drain the water so fast that the teams can play just after the rain.

The ICC President and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar were the major guests at its inauguration on April 1, 2012. However, deputy CM Ajit Pawar and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan were also invited.
