Introduction of Joe Root 

Joe Root (Joseph Edward Root) is the right-handed top order batsman of England Cricket Team. In addition, he has played for England in all formats of Cricket from 2012. Furthermore, he was the previous captain of the Test Team of England. His excellence in test cricket showed from the fact that he is among the top 10th highest scorers in Test Internationals and is widely regarded as the highest and active run scorer in Tests. Early Life

Joseph Edward Root was born in Dore, Sheffield, England on December 30,1990 in a Christian Family. He was born as the Eldest Son of Matt Root (father) and Helen Root (mother). He has 3 siblings, a younger brother namely Billy Root and 2 sisters named Wanda Root and Amanda Root. Moreover, he got his education from Dore Primary School and King Ecgbert School of Sheffield.

After completion of his school education, he joined Worksop College and later joined Sheffield Collegiate CC, Abbeydale Park by following his father’s footsteps. Furthermore, Root took his inspiration from the Former Captain and Batsman of England, Michael Vaughan who was also enrolled at Sheffield Collegiate previously. His teammates of the college used to call him FEC/Future England Captain. At the Annual cricket tournament of England named Bunbury Festival, Joe won the man of the tournament award. As a player and person, he shows full support for Sheffield United Football Club.

Domestic Career

At domestic level of cricket, Root begins by playing for Yorkshire Second Team on July 18,2007. During the match he showed brilliant performance and later continued playing for his academy and was declared as the player of the tournament when his academy won the title of proARCH trophy. After the successful start in the second level team, he was then ranked to the first team of Yorkshire for the final Pro40 match at the Headingly Cricket Ground. In that match he remained the top scorer with his 63 runs.

After the 3 years contract with Yorkshire, he was later selected in the England Squad for Under-19 Cricket World Cup. However, England was eliminated before the semi-finals. After the CWC, to polish his game he was enrolled in the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy of Adelaide, Australia.

Furthermore, he also played in the County Championship in 2011 against Worcestershire. He scored his first Championship 100 at Scarborough against Sussex. In addition, Root also led Yorkshire for the County Championship 2014 when his team won the title. In the 2023 IPL auction, he was drafted by Rajasthan Royals. Whereas he also played for Trent Rockets in 2022 for The Hundred 2022.

Test Internationals

Root’s debut in the Test Internationals was made during the 4th Test of the series against India in 2012. Root made good start with 73/229 in 1st innings and 20* in the 2nd innings and later England won that Test series. After India, Root was selected in the England Squad for the Test series against New Zealand. In the 2013 New Zealand tour of England, Root made his 1st Test Century with 104/167 at the home ground Headingly.

Later he was announced as the top scorer of that series attaining 243 and England won the series with 2-0. During a test series against Sri Lanka in 2014, Root made an unbeaten score of 200/298 at Lords in the first Test. His spectacular performance led England towards scoring highest Test Scores against Sri Lanka. During a Test series against New Zealand in 2022, Root made a total of 396 Runs in 6 innings with the average of 99 and won the Player of the series award.

Joe Root Test Captaincy

Root became the Captain of England team in Test format replacing Alastair Cook in February,2017. Furthermore, he was the 80th Captain of the England Cricket team. During his 1st match as a captain, he made his 12th Test Century against South Africa at Lords on July 6,2017. After the series against South Africa, he then captained the English Team in the Ashes series 2017-18. However, England Team’s performance in that series was not up to the mark. Root then captained the England Squad against Pakistan and India in 2018. Under his leadership, England won a Test series against Sri Lanka in 2018 for the first time after 2001. He then captained the English Team for Ashes series 2019 and test series against NZ and SA in 2019-20.

Later in 2020, England played Test series against West Indies and Pakistan under his captaincy. He then led England in the series against Sri Lanka & India in 2021 and against Australia and West Indies in 2021-22. However, after captaining 4th Ashes Test and for the 60th time making a record and completing his 64 tests as a captain he then resigned from the post of a captain in 2022. Overall, he captained the team from 2017-2022. In addition, he holds the record for most 64 Test Matches as the Captain of England team.

ODIs

Root debuted in ODIs against India in 2013, however he didn’t bat but only bowled 9 overs. During the 4th match of the series, he scored his maiden ODI 50 and scored a total of 163 runs in that series. He was also among the squad members of England for the Champions Trophy 2013-14. Later he was announced as the 12th man of the Team of the Tournament by ICC. In the ICC CWC 2015, he was also the squad member of the England team. His ODI performance in 2015 led him towards the 12th man of the World ODI 11 by ICC.

During the ICC Champion Trophy 2017 he was named as the member of the “Team of Tournament” by ICC as he became the 4th highest run scorer. In 2018, he scored 800 runs of ODIs in 19 innings. He was also the squad member of the England for ICC CWC2019 and later included in the team of the Tournament by ICC. Root played his 150th ODI Match in June 2021 against Sri Lanka and also completed his 6,000 ODI scores.

T20Is

At the T20Is, Root debuted against India in 2012, where he didn’t bat. Later in the Ashes series 2013-14, he batted at no. 4 in the T20I against Australia and came in with 37-3 where he scored his career best 90*/49. During the England tour to South Africa 2015-16, Root made quick 34/18 runs in the 2nd T20. Later in 2016, he was a member of the England Squad for ICC T20 World Cup. During the 2nd match against South Africa, he scored 83 on 44 balls where the England team made a record chasing the target score of 230 runs. Root was named as the player of the match. Root made a total of 249 runs throughout the tournament and became the 3rd highest run scorer. However, his T20 era in the England team goes from 2012-19.
