India and Sri Lanka faced off in the 33rd Match of the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. Furthermore, the match was hosted by Wankhede Cricket Stadium, Mumbai on November 2, 2023. In addition, Sri Lanka decided to bowl first after winning the Toss. However, the decision became a disaster for them later as the team India gave them a huge target of 358 runs to Chase.

Whereas Sri Lanka’s team was all out in 19.4 overs with just 55 runs mainly due to the brilliance of Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj. So, India won this game excellently with 302 runs. However, the Man of the Match award was given to Mohammad Shami for his spell of 5/18 wickets.

First Innings, India VS Sri Lanka

India on 357 runs on the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs 

Rohit Sharma (C) and Shubman Gill 

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were the openers of team India for the 1st innings. Whereas Dilshan Madushanka was the bowler from Sri Lanka. Sharma played a 1st ball 4 fabulously. However, on the 2nd ball Madushanka dismissed the wicket of Rohit Sharma at just 4/2 runs.

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli was the next top-order batsman of team India. In addition, Virat initiated a sizzling boundary 4 on the 6th ball. Later Kohli again threw a 4 on the 2nd ball of the 2nd over. Moreover, Gill too adjusted himself and started making runs from the start of the 4th over and made 2 back-to-back boundary 4s during the 4th over. At the 5 overs, India was on 25/1.

Kohli was on fire and hitted two more 4s during the 5th over and also two excellent boundary 4s in the 6th over too. However, during the 7th and 8th over Shubman too played 2 fantastic 4s. At this stage 10 over were completed with the score of 60/1 runs. Kohli repeated a 4 again on the 1st ball of the 10th over. Whereas Shubman threw a 4 during the 12th over too. At this stage the game went great with increased good runs for team India.

 Furthermore, Gill and Kohli both hit a pair of classic 4s during the 15th over. In addition, at the 1st ball of the 16th over, Kohli completed his Half Century. However, Gill completed his half century with a brilliant 4 during the 18th over.

So, team India was at 120/1 in the 20 overs. Later game flowed steadily with a 4 from Kohli during the 21st over and the 24th over with an added 4 from Gill during the 24th over too.

 Furthermore, during the 27th over, Gill initiated the first boundary 6 of the innings with exceptional grace. In addition, he repeated a 6 again in the 28th over. However, after a 4 during the 28th over, Gill was out on the strike by Madushanka during the 29th ball with 92/92 runs.

Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer

As the next batsman Shreyas Iyer appeared on the crease, 30 overs were completed with 193/2 runs. Unfortunately, Kohli too lost his wicket at the 3rd ball of the 31st over at 94/88 runs on the ball by Madushanka.

Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul

KL Rahul joined Shreyas Iyer on the Crease as the next player. Later after the difference of an over, the game again cheered up as Rahul played a stunning 4 in the 33rd over. However, Shreyas Iyer made a flawless boundary 6 during the same 33rd over. The number of runs increased for India as Shreyas again hit a boundary 6 during the 34th over too. At the 35th over, Rahul initiated a 4 whereas Shreyas again shot a stunning 6. 

However, one more wicket was down for India before the Completion of the 40 overs as KL Rahul was out. Moreover, Rahul was out on the strike by Chameera at his 21/19 runs on the 2nd ball of the 39th over.

Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar came and got a huge round of applause for his back-to-back 2 magical 4s during the 39th over. So, at 40 overs, the score was 264/4 for India. The game again began with full velocity as Shreyas too produced a top notch 6 during the 40th over. Later it halted at 41st over again as Suryakumar lost his Wicket by the ball of Mighty Madushanka at 12/9 runs.

With this Wicket Madushanka became the leading wicket taker of this tournament too.

Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja was the next batsman. At the 3rd ball of the 42nd over, Shreyas completed his half century with a classical 4. Whereas Jadeja made some slow runs without any boundary hit. In addition, Shreyas made a 4 during the 46th over and later cheered the Indian audience with his sizzling 2 back-to-back 6s during the 47th over.

However, Madushanka strikes again, and Shreyas Iyer was the 5th wicket for him. Shreyas made a total 82/56 runs.

Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammad Shami

Mohammad Shami approached the crease as the next player. Further during the 48th over Jadeja first initiated a 4 then with the difference of two balls he once again initiated an excellent 6. As compared to Jadeja, Shami only made 2 runs on 4 balls and lost his wicket on the run out by Kusal Mendis at the 3rd ball of the 49th over.

Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah came and made just 1 run on 1 ball as Jadeja’s wicket was dismissed on the last ball of the 49th over. Moreover, his wicket was lost on the run out by Mendis and Samarawickrama at 35/24 runs.

So, the 50 overs for India were completed with a good score of 357 runs on the loss of 8 Wickets.

Sri Lanka on 55 runs on the loss of 10 wickets in 19.4 overs

Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne

The 2nd innings begins with the wicket loss of Pathum Nissanka, the opening batsman of Sri Lanka. Furthermore, his wicket was dismissed on the Lbw b Jasprit Bumrah.

Kusal Mendis was the next top order batsman with Dimuth Karunaratne on the crease. However, on the 1st ball of the 1st over, Karunaratne too lost his wicket on the Lbw ball by Mohammad Siraj with 0 runs.

Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama

After the 2nd wicket loss at an early-stage Sadeera Samarawickrama was the next player. But the start overs were very unlucky for Sri Lanka as their 3rd wicket was also lost on the 5th ball of the 1st over. Moreover this wicket was of Samarawickrama dismissed by Mohammad Siraj at 0 runs.

Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka

At 2 overs, 3 wickets are already gone for Sri Lanka. Charith Asalanka was the next batsman. The game began and stopped again at the start of the 3rd over because the wicket of Mendis was dismissed by the ball of Mohammad Siraj at 1/10 runs.

Charith Asalanka and Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews was the next player. In addition, he threw a nice 4 on the last ball of the 3rd over. The game began to flow steadily without any boundary hit and with some slow runs until the 9th over. At the 3rd ball of the 9th over, Asalanka’s wicket was dismissed by Mohammad Shami at his 1/24 runs.

Dushan Hemantha came and went back in the blink of an eye after losing his wicket on the first ball he got. Moreover, he was out on the ball by Mohammad Shami.

After the arrival of Chameera, 10 overs were completed for Sri Lanka with 14/6 runs. The match went slowly when at the 3rd ball of the 11th over, the wicket of Chameera was lost. Furthermore, he was out on the ball by Mohammad Shami at 0/6.

Angelo Mathews and Maheesh Theekshana

The downfall of wickets for Sri Lanka stopped for a while after Maheesh Theekshana came as the next player. In addition, he hit a boundary 4 on the 5th ball of the 12th over. However, on the 1st ball of the 13th over, Angelo Mathews lost his wicket on the ball also by Mohammad Shami at 12/25 runs.

Maheesh Theekshana and Kasun Rajitha

Rajitha came as the next batsman and hit a boundary 4 on the first ball he got by Shami. After 15 overs, Theekshana too initiated a boundary 4. Later after hitting one more boundary 4, Rajitha got out by the ball of Mohammad Shami at the end of 17th over at his 14/17 runs.

Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka

Madushanka was the last player of the Sri Lankan team. At the 18.3 over, 50/9 runs were completed for Sri Lanka. Further at the first ball of the 19th over, Madushanka played a beautiful boundary 4. However, during the same over his wicket was dismissed on the ball by Ravindra Jadeja at his ⅚ runs.

Maheesh remained not out with 12/23 runs. So, the Sri Lanka team was defeated in this match by India badly with 55/10 runs in 19.4 overs.
