Trivandrum International Stadium, currently known as the Greenfield International Stadium is located in Kariavattom, Thiruvananthapuram of Kerala India. In addition, the stadium is also called The Sports Hub.

The history of this ground is not very old as it was established back in 2015. Moreover, the 36 acres of land for the ground was leased by the University of Kerala. Whereas its total capacity of holding the spectators is 50,000 for football matches and 44,400 for Cricket Matches Respectively.

Construction of the ground

The Stadium was built on the 36 acres of land which was leased by the University of Kerala for $146,527.23/per year for about 15 years. In addition, this ground was the first one to be established on the base of DBOT (design, build, operate and transfer). 

Back in 2012 it was a broken ground which was established completely in 2015 at a $49 million cost. Furthermore, it was architecture by Collage Design, Mumbai India. Whereas the main contractors were Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Limited.

Greenfield International Stadium Ground Facilities

Initially the ground was constructed in such a way as to be used both for the football Matches as well as for the Cricket Matches internationally. In contrast with the FIFA rules and regulations, the playing area was constructed having the seating capacity of almost 50,000 onlookers. 

In addition, the ground was divided into 4 zones where the east zone was used for football and the north zone was for Cricket. Moreover, every zone contains the player’s lounge, gymnasium, stock room and the Media Centre. However, the South Zone was dedicated for the Food Court and the shopping malls. Whereas the adjacent arena contains the latest facilities for Volleyball, Squash, table tennis, swimming pool and basketball.

Furthermore, Greenfield International Stadium is not so far from Trivandrum Central Railway Station and Central Bus Station. In addition, it’s the 1st eco-friendly stadium of India having rainwater harvesting facility too.

International Cricket in Greenfield International Stadium

ODIs

The 1st Cricket ODI was played at the ground on November 1, 2018. Whereas the opposing teams here were India and the West Indies. Moreover the 2nd match was won by team India by 9 wickets where Virat Kohli was the Player of the Match. However, the stadium hosted its last ODI on January 15, 2023, between India and Sri Lanka.

India faced off New Zealand in the first T20I in this Stadium on November 7, 2017, which was disturbed by the Rain. However, India won the match at the end by 6 runs. Furthermore, Jasprit Bumrah was declared as the player of the Match. However, the last T20I played at the venue on September 28, 2022, between India and South Africa.

Boundary Length of the Stadium

The pitch surface of the ground is Grass and not long. However, it’s beneficial for the bowlers and difficult for the batters. Whereas there is not much playing area present in the Stadium. Moreover, the length of straighter boundaries are almost 70 meters; however, 65 meters for the square boundaries.

Pitch Report

The pitch is the heaven for the bowlers which gave benefits to pacers at the early game, whereas more beneficial for the spinners as it matured. However, it’s very difficult for the batters as it’s a grass surface.

International Football in the Stadium

The Stadium hosted its first international tournament of football in 2015 for SAFF Championship. Later India won the tournament by defeating Afghanistan 2-1 in the finals with the audience crossing figure of 48,500.

Greenfield International Stadium Awards

Greenfield International Stadium was crowned as the winner of the David Vickers Awards for the New Venue of the year in 2016 at the Stadium Business Awards on June 1, 2016.

Stadium Controversy

As of the sources, BCCI decided to schedule the final ODI of the series of 5 against West Indies in this venue. However, due to the disapproval by the co-owner of Kerala Blasters Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguli and the fans of Kerala Blasters the Match was later played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium instead. Hence the matter was resolved.
