On 14 October 2018, Coetzee got his List A debut for Free State in the 2018-19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. Hence on April 12, 2019, he made his Twenty20 debut for the Knights in the 2018-19 CSA T20 Challenge. On October 7, 2019, he made his first-class debut for the Knights in the 2019-20 CSA 4-Day Franchise Series.

Therefore, He was nominated to South Africa’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup squad in December 2019. He was picked to the Free State squad in April 2021, ahead of the South African cricket season 2021-22.

Coetzee was picked to South Africa’s Twenty20 International (T20I) team in June 2022.He was named to South Africa’s Test team for the series versus the West Indies in February 2023. On 28 Feb, 2023, he made his Test debut versus the West Indies.
