England and Netherlands were the opposing teams in the 40th Match of the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. Moreover, the Match was hosted by the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on the 8th of November 2023.As the team England won the Match they decided to bat First. Later, they won the game with 160 runs and defeated team Netherlands badly. In addition, Ben Stokes was announced as the player of the Match for his innings of 108/84 runs.

First Innings, ENG vs NED

England on 339/9 runs on the loss of 9 wickets in 50 Overs

Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan

Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow were the openers of the first innings from the England team. Whereas Aryan Dutt was the bowler from the Netherlands team. Bairstow initiated the 1st 4 of the innings at the 4th ball beautifully. In addition, Malan also played a series of 3 fantastic 4s during the 1st over and sped the match. During these overs, Malan seemed to be a boundary hitting machine giving 4s again and again.

Furthermore, he again played 2 back-to-back 4s during the 2nd over. Later 3rd over too passed by including a pair of 4s from both players. So, the 5 overs were completed with 42/0 for England. However, the match halted at the last ball of the 6th over due to the wicket loss of Bairstow. Moreover, his wicket was dismissed by Dutt at 15/17 runs.

Dawid Malan and Joe Root

Joe Root came next after Bairstow. However, Malan remained on fire as he again hit three flawless boundary 4s during the 7th over. During the 8th over, a 4 again initiated by Malan which resulted in the completion of his half century. At the 10 overs, England was on 70/1 runs. Later, Root after playing slow for some time, hit his first boundary 4 during the 13th over. 

However, the first boundary 6 of the innings was initiated by Dawid Malan at the start of the 16th over and repeated again during the 18th over. Hence, the 20 overs were completed for the England team with 132/1. However, Root lost his wicket at the start of the 20th over by van Beek at his 28/35 runs.

Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes

The play started again by the arrival of Ben Stokes on the crease. However, at the last ball of the 21st over, Malan was out on the ball by Dutt. The total score made by Malan was 87/74 runs.

Ben Stokes and Harry Brook

Harry Brook came as the next batsman. In addition, he played two wonderful back-to-back 4s during the 23rd over. Whereas Stokes initiated a beautiful 4 at the start of the 24th over and repeated it again during the 25th over. Later Brook got out on the ball by de Leede during the 26th over at 11/16 runs.


Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler (C)

After the 4 wickets were lost, Jos Buttler joined Ben Stokes on the crease as the next player. Later, Stokes played one more boundary 4 and the score was 178/4 at the 30 overs for England. However, Buttler lost his wicket at the start of the 30th over by the ball of Paul van Meekeren at 5/11.

Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali was the next batsman. Later the match went with slow runs by the players without any boundary hit till the 35th over. Later on, the 2nd ball of the 35th over, Moeen Ali was dismissed by the ball of Dutt at 4/15 runs.

Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes

Chris Woakes came after the 6th wicket was gone. The match continued without any boundary until the 39th over. At the 2nd ball of the 39th over, Woakes initiated his first boundary 4 and completed the 40 overs with 215/6 for England.

Later, Woakes adjusted himself well on the crease and hit 2 boundary 4s during the 40th over. However, Stokes played a classical boundary 6 during the 42nd over. Later, 46th over was the boundary hit over by the players ending with a 4 and a 6 from Stokes with the addition of 4 from Woakes too.

Stokes again hit a boundary 4 and completed his Century during the 47th over. Whereas Woakes played a boundary 4 and 6 flawlessly and completed his half century during the 48th over. However, in the same over his wicket was dismissed by de Leede at 51/45 runs.

Ben Stokes and David Willey

David Willey came and played a stunning boundary 6 on the first ball he got by de Leede. However, on the next ball his wicket was gone with 6/2 runs during the 48th over.

Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson

Gus Atkinson came as the next player. Later Stokes produced a beautiful 6 and on the next ball he was out on the ball by van Beek at his 108/84 runs.

Gus Atkinson and Adil Rashid

Adil Rashid was only able to make 1/1 as 50 overs were completed here. Whereas Atkinson made 2/2, with both remaining not out.

The target score for the Netherlands team given by the England team to chase was 340/9.

Netherlands on 179 runs on the loss of 10 Wickets in 37.2 overs

Wesley Barresi and Max O’Dowd

At the beginning of the 2nd innings, Max O’Dowd and Wesley Barresi were the openers from the Netherlands team. Whereas David Willey was the bowler from team England. Furthermore, during the 3rd over, Barresi played the first boundary 4 hit of the innings. Nextly, O’Dowd also played a 4 at the start of the 4th over and later lost his wicket during the same over by Chris Woakes at 5/11 runs.

Colin Ackermann was the next player who also got out on the 2nd ball he got by David Willey during the 5th over at 0 runs.

Wesley Barresi and Sybrand Engelbrecht

After the 2nd wicket loss, Sybrand Engelbrecht came as the next player. In addition, he lifted the score by playing a classical 4 on the last ball of the 5th over. Later the scores went slow without any boundary hit until the 10th over. So, the score at 10 overs was 23/2 for the Netherlands.

Later Sybrand hit a boundary 4 during the 10th over. However, Barresi came into full velocity as he threw a stunning first boundary 6 along with the 2 4s during the 13th and 14th over respectively. In addition, Sybrand too initiated a boundary 6 during the 16th over. However, the sped-up game stopped at the 3rd ball of the 17th over, where Moeen Ali dismissed Barresi’s wicket at 37/62 runs.

Scott Edwards, the Captain of the team came as the next player. At 20 overs, Netherlands was on 77/3 runs. Later, Sybrand played a boundary 4, following him Edwards also hit a 4 during the 21st over. However, Sybrand later got out on the ball by Willey during the 22nd over at his 33/49 runs.

Bas de Leede appeared as the next player and played a boundary 4 at the start of the 24th over. However, after 1 more boundary hit from him, his wicket was dismissed by Rashid at 10/12 runs.

Scott Edwards and Teja Nidamanuru

Nidamanuru came and cheered up the game with his beautiful boundary 4. Following him, Edwards too gave the 1st spectacular 6 of the innings during the 25th over. In addition, Nidamanuru also played a boundary 6 flawlessly during the 27th over. By the addition of one more 6 from Nidamanuru, the score was 140/5 at 30 overs.

Moreover, Edwards hit 2 boundary 4s during the 30th over. At this stage the number of scores went well for Netherlands as both the players were stable on the wickets. Nidamanuru again shot a classical 6 during the 31st over. Unfortunately, the wicket of Edwards was gone at the end of the 33rd over. Moreover, his wicket taker was Moeen Ali at his 38/42 runs.

Logan van Beek came and went after just one over with 2/2. Furthermore, his wicket was dismissed by Adil Rashid during the 34th over.

Roelof van der Merwe was the next player however he went out during the next over without making any runs by Moeen Ali.

Aryan Dutt was next to van der Merwe. Nidamanuru played a fantastic 4 at the start of the 36th over. However, Dutt lost his wicket at just 1/3 at the last ball of the 36th over by Rashid.

Paul van Meekeren came and initiated a boundary 4 at the first ball he got by Rashid. However, he was out on the 2nd ball of the 37th over by Moeen Ali at 4/3 runs.

So, the Match ended here for the Netherlands as they got defeated by the England team with160 runs.
