Bangladesh Squad: ICC ODI World Cup 2023

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is to begin on October 5. However Bangladesh Squad will play its first encounter on October 8. It is undoubtedly the most-awaited event for more than just cricket fans. Yet others also find it attractive to watch it. India would host the event. However, the last World Cup, about 4 years ago, was played in England. Much of the things have changed since then. Yet the teams have gone through major changes. Some emerging talents have joined the teams. However, some experienced people got retired in these 4 years.

ODI Ranking of Bangladesh Squad

Among the ten teams that are supposed to participate in the ODI World Cup, Bangladesh is in rank 8. That is according to the ICC ranking.

The team, after playing 35 matches, could rank 92. All teams’ boards had done their proper preparations, including the Bangladesh cricket board. A total of 15 players were selected. Among them, 11 will be active players, while all others will be reserved.

It is exciting to know that Bangladeshi captain Shakib ul Hasan leads the ICC ODI all-rounder ranking. Moreover, he also leads the ICC T20 ranking for all-rounders. Yet Mehdi Hasan Miraz is in the 8th rank in the ODI all-rounder ranking.

It is to be noted that none of the Bangladeshi players falls in the top 20 ranks of batsmen. Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan is in the 17th position in the ICC bowler ranking.

Shakib Al Hasan (Captain of Bangladesh Squad)

Shakib al-Hasan is also known as Saqibul Hasan. He was born on March 24 in 1987. He has a left-hand batting style and a slow left-arm Orthodox. Moreover, he is considered the greatest player of the first two decades. Thus, he is known for his consistency, accuracy, and canny batting with a wide range of strokes.

Shakib’s performances in ODIs and Tests have been crucial. Thus, he became the first Bengali bowler to attain a double of 2000 runs and 100 wickets. Moreover, he was given captaincy in 2009 after the injury of Mashrafe Mortaza. Yet his form remains consistent. However, his off-field shenanigans led to his suspension in 2014. Furthermore, in the 2019 ICC World Cup, he hit his peak. Thus, he scored 606 runs and took five wickets against Afghanistan.

Litton Das

Litton Kumer Das is the wicketkeeper batsman of Bangladesh. He was born in October 1994. The player is 28 years old now. He is the right-handed batter and does right-arm off-break bowls. He is on the rank # 50 in ICC batting ranking.

Moreover, he is thought to be the first long-term successor to Mushfiqur Rahim. However, he gained recognition for his domestic performance for Abahani in the Dhaka Premier League. Furthermore, he performed so well in the Rangpur Division in the National Cricket League in the 2014–15 season. Later on, he scored a century and a half in the next season. Subsequently, he was added to Bangladesh’s T20 squad in April 2015.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim

Tanzid Hasan Tamim is the opening batsman for Bangladesh. He was born on December 1, 2000. The 22-year-old player is a left-handed batsman. Moreover, he started his ODI career in August 2023 against Sri Lanka. The match was played at Pallekle. On the contrary, he played his last ODI to date on September 26, 2023, against New Zealand at Mirpur.

Furthermore, he has played in Rajshahi Division Under 18. Yet his career is not that vast, so the few franchises and teams he joined are discussed below.

Najmul Hossain Shanto 

Najmul Hossain Shanto is the top-order batter. He was born in August 1998. Moreover, he is the left-handed batsman. On the contrary, he does the right arm offbreak balls. It is exciting to know that he emerged through a school match. 

His double century grabbed the age group scouts’ attention. As a result, he soon became part of Bangladesh’s under-17s. Moreover, he joined the under-19s in 2013. Yet he played in two World Cups in 2014 and 2016.

He made his debut for Rajshahi in November 2014. Thus, following the year, he scored his first-class century. Furthermore, he played his first genuine game of regional competition in the 2016 Dhaka Premier League. 

Thus scoring 537 runs at a 41.30 average. However, it was his performances at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup (259 runs at 64.75) that captured the eye of the officials. Ultimately, he convinced them to choose him for the main team’s training camp in Sydney. It was to be arranged prior to their 2016–17 New Zealand tour.

Subsequently he played his debut ODI in january 2017 against New Zealand. Christchurch was the venue of this event. However he played his last ODI against Afghanistan at Mirpur in July 2023.

Md. Towhid Hridoy is the top-order batsman on the team. He was born in December 2000. The young player is a right-handed batter and a right-arm off-break bowler. Moreover, he started his ODI career in March 2023. He played his debut match against Ireland at Sylhet. On the other hand, he played his last match against New Zealand at Mirpur in September 2023.

Mushfiqur Rahim

Mohammad Mushfiqur Rahim is Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper-batter. He was born in May 1987 in Bogra. He is the right-handed batsman. Moreover, he is the brother-in-law of Mahmudullah. Mushfiqur Rahim has been a key player in the country’s cricket team. He started his career as a wild-card inclusion for the team’s maiden tour of England.

Moreover, he won the Under-19 World Cup in 2006. Then featured in a test against Sri Lanka in the following year. Later on, in 2007, he was selected as the first-choice wicketkeeper for the World Cup in the West Indies. In addition, in the 2010s, he became a dependable mainstay.

Along with being one of the better spin players in the Bangladesh line-up, Later on, he was appointed captain in 2011. Subsequently, he served in 94 internationals until 2018. It is to be noted that in 2013, he produced a double-century against Sri Lanka. Furthermore, in 2017, he scored two Test double-hundreds. In 2023, he became the first to play 100 games in the BPL.

He played his debut match against England at Lords’ in 2005. However played last ODI against Afghanistan at Mirpur in June 2023.

Mahmudullah Riyad

Mahmudullah is an all-rounder with a tidy off spin and the middle order of Bangladesh. He was born in February 1986. The 37-year-old player is also known as Riyad. The all-rounder is right-handed, either in batting or bowling. Yet he throws off-break balls.

He was born in Mymensingh. Hence, he learned the game in his hometown before joining the Under-19 World Cup in 2004. Moreover, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2007. Thus, his average was 193 in the ODI tri-series against Sri Lanka and India in 2009.

In addition, his most applause-worthy contribution is 159 runs against the West Indies in the 2012 ODI series. Furthermore, his stunning performance against Zimbabwe in 2014 confirmed his place in the 2015 World Cup squad.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz

Mehidy Hasan Miraz is also known as Miraz. He was born in October 1997. Moreover, he is a right-handed batsman as well as a right-arm off-break bowler. He led the country to its first appearance in the Under-19 World Cup semi-final in 2016. Moreover, it resulted in his under-19 and first-class levels.

Mehedi learned off-spin from Sheikh Salahuddin, the perfect off-spinner of his generation. In the 2014–15 National Cricket League, he played his first match for elite cricket. Thus, he was a star in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup.

Later on he played his first ODI in March 2017 against Sri Lanka at Dambulla. However he played last ODI against India at Colombo in September  2023.

Nasum Ahmed

Nasum Ahmed is the Bangladesh bowler. He was born in December 1994. Moreover, he is a slow left-arm Orthodox bowler. He started his national career with his debut in July 2022. He played it against the West Indies. However, against New Zealand, he played his last match in September 2023 at Mirpur.

Furthermore, he started his franchise career in 2011. Meanwhile, he became part of List A in 2014.

Mahedi Hasan

Mahedi Hasan is the all-rounder for the Bangladesh team. He was born in December 1994. Moreover, he is the right-handed batsman. As well, right arm off-break bowler. He is a talented off-spinner, gun fielder, and batsman. 

However, he has played 159 domestic matches for 10 Bangladesh teams in List A, First Class, and T20 tournaments. Furthermore, he has made six centuries in first-class cricket. Yet he played in three T20I series from 2018 to 2020.

It is to be discussed that his match-winning performance let him win four out of five National Cricket League first-class titles. Moreover, South Zone won the last two Bangladesh Cricket League elite-class tournaments.

It is to be noted that in March 2021, he played his debut ODI against New Zealand at Dunedin. However, in September 2023, he played against New Zealand once again. This match was played in Mirpur.

Taskin Ahmed

Taskin Ahmed, also known as Tazin, He was born in April 1995. Moreover, he is the fastest bowler in Bangladesh. However, he can bat with his left hand. Yet he is a right-arm fast bowler. It would be interesting to know that he gained fame after his 2012 video against England under-19s went viral. Moreover, he is the product of Dhaka’s cricket academy. Yet he began his career with a four-wicket haul in the BPL in 2013.

Following a knee injury, he was rehabilitated. Still, he bowled regularly in nets. Furthermore, he made his T20 debut for BAN in the international T20 and ODI series against India in June 2014. His performances and trophies took him to the senior team.

Mustafizur Rahman

Mustafizur Rahman is the left-arm fast bowler. He was born in September 1995 in Satkhira. Yet he is the left-handed batter. He made his debut in 2013–14 for Khulna. Later on, he was chosen for the Bangladesh A team. Thus, I went on a West Indies tour. Moreover, he developed an off-cut. Hence, he took 26 wickets in 2014–15.

It is to be noted that through his impressive performances in bilateral series and the IPL, he made his place in international cricket.

So he played his debut ODI in June 2015 against India at Mirpur. Furthermore, it is to be noted that he played his last ODI to date in September 2023 at Mirpur against New Zealand.

Hasan Mahmud

Hasan Mahmud, a young pace bowler from Bangladesh, was born in October 1999 in Laxmipur. Moreover, his batting style was right-handed. However, his bowling style was right-arm fast medium. So he gained attention for his accurate, front-on action and pace.

Despite being so young, he attained eleven wickets in the Bangladesh T20 Cup. He secured a maiden call-up in ODIs. Furthermore, he played his debut ODI in January 2021 against the West Indies at Mirpur. In contrast, the last ODI was played at Mirpur against New Zealand.

Shoriful Islam

Mohammad Shoriful Islam is a left-arm medium-pace bowler. He was born in Panchagor in June 2001. Moreover, he gained fame in 2020 Bangladesh’s under-19 World Cup triumph. It is to be noted that he took nine wickets. Thus impressed in knockout games against South Africa, India, and New Zealand.

Despite the pandemic, he earned his first call up to the ODI in January 2021. Bowling coach Alamgir Kabir caught him in play. Soon, he developed into a pace bowler. However, his World Cup-winning performance increased expectations for him to join the national team. So he made his ODI debut in May 2021 at Mirpur against Sri Lanka.
